The extragalactic detection of CH3CCH and CH3CN are reported, and the findings are studied to determine the excitation conditions of the dense nuclear gas component in starburst galaxies. CH3CCH, the most complex molecule observed outside the Galaxy, is detected for several mm-wave lines toward the M82SW molecular hotspot and in the nucleus of NGC253, and CH3CN is observed in the central portion of NGC253. The abundance of CH3CN is found to be less than that found in Galactic clouds, whereas the abundances of CH3CCH are similar to those of Galactic clouds. The line-intensity ratios of the two molecules suggest densities of a few times 10,000/cu cm for the galaxies, and the abundances show that the chemical compositions of the galaxies are different. Abundance variations on a large scale are discussed and it is theorized that differences in kinetic temperatures and ion densities, evaporation from grain mantles, and/or frequent shock waves can account for the variations.
