The synoptic overview provided by satellite imagery and small-scale aerial photography has been used to analyse megascopic landforms over a 41,000 km2 region of southeastern Queensland. A distinctive soil-covered coastal plain of low relief is separated from the Eastern Highlands by the regional Great Escarpment, which forms a coherent landform at the scale of satellite image interpretation. Between latitudes 24°S and 26°S, the Great Escarpment coincides with a north-northwest trending Middle to Late Triassic axis of rifting and epizonal plutonism, referred to as the Mount Perry lineament zone. The lineament zone is demarcated in the study area by a photogeologically distinctive chain of epizonal Mesozoic plutons and by subsequent Cainozoic tensional faulting and localised graben sedimentation related to opening of the Tasman Sea. Upwarping of the Eastern Highlands and erosion of the Great Escarpment appear to have resulted from monoclinal flexuring along the Mount Perry lineament zone. North of latitude 24°S, the Great Escarpment coincides with a line of northwest trending plutons and hatholiths which display low resistance to erosion. Multiple planation surfaces developed upon these granitoids suggest repeated monoclinal warping during formation of the Great Escarpment.
