Observations of gravitational lens systems may yield useful estimates for characteristics of the lenses and for cosmological parameters. However, the nature of these observations restricts the types of characteristics that can be determined. The authors demonstrate some of these inherent restrictions, i.e., degeneracies in parameter estimation, through analysis of the effects of "prismatic", "similarity", "magnification", and "combined" transformations. Each of the four transformations applied to a general gravitational lens system leaves subsets of observable image properties unchanged. The authors use the properties of these transformations to investigate the estimation of parameters from observables for several simple lens systems. Also, they present a new derivation, based on the properties of one of these transformations, of the relation between the time delay (difference in propagation time along two ray paths) and the mass distribution of the deflector.
