Scientific paper

Deep space missions during the 70's are reviewed and compared. Data transmission rates and accuracy in position determination are emphasized. The Deep Space Network is briefly described. Missions discussed include Helios, Pioneer, Viking, Pioneer Venus, and Voyagers 1 and 2. Missions for the 80's are considered. These are Galileo, the International Solar Polar Mission, and Giotto (Comet Halley Flyby). The potential for interstellar missions is also considered.
