Within the program of photometric and spectral investigation of stars in the vicinity of the North America and Pelican nebulae, we have determined two-dimensional photometric spectral types of 40 faint stars (down to V = 18 mag) in an area of 12X12 arcmin size in the direction of the dense dust cloud known as Gulf of Mexico (a part of the larger cloud L935). The frames were exposed in eight medium-band filters of the Vilnius and Stromgren systems with the 1.8 meter VATT telescope. Most of the stars are K and M dwarfs located either in front of or inside the dark cloud at a distance of about 550 pc. Two of the stars are known Orion-type variables, and some more are suspected to be Hα emission stars. For confirmation of their YSO origin spectroscopic observations are planned.
