In 1990 we began an H-alpha survey of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds at ESO La Silla with a 36 cm telescope. The goal of this survey is to study in detail complexes of H II regions linked with molecular clouds as well as the global spiral structure of our Galaxy. We describe briefly the specialized instrumentation used for this survey (telescope, focal reducer, scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, and photon counting system). The transmission function of the instrument is carefully analyzed since it determines the quality of our data. We emphasize the care taken for calibration and the choice of parameters when observing (characteristics of the interference filter, of the Fabry-Perot interferometer and the way it is scanned, etc.). We present our results for a complex of H II regions at longitude of 303 deg. The observed field, in the direction of the Coalsack, is especially interesting since we have found on optical H II region at a kinematical distance of 11.7 kpc.
