Recently, the carbon star S Sct was found to be surrounded by a large 2' - 3' diameter mass loss shell radiating in CO (Olofsson et al., 1992 AA Letters, 253, L17.). This paper presents deep ccd images made of a 5' diameter field centered on S Sct, in an attempt to detect circumstellar dust from reflection of optical light in the envelope. The observations were made with the 40'' telescope of the Lick Observatory in July and August 1992. Total exposures of 1 hour in I band and 3 hours with a broadband green filter were made using a coronagraph to block the light of the central star. The faintest features on the green image are 24th magnitude. The images show filamentary structure in the area of the CO envelope. Additional structure appears when the I band image is divided by the green image. An analysis will be made to attempt to determine if the structures seen in the images are due to cirrus or mass loss.
