Wide dynamic range images of the field around the quasar 3C 273 are obtained by occulting the stellar part of the quasar image in a coronagraphic CCD camera. An elliptical nebulosity is revealed, which is of the same shape as that detected by Wyckoff et al. (1980). Scaled comparison-star subtraction reveals that most of the flux in the nebulosity falls in the red, appears morphologically similar to NGC 4889, and has an absolute magnitude of approximately Mv = -22.5 if it is at the redshift distance of 3C 273. It is concluded that the 3C 273 galaxy is comparable with a first-ranked cluster elliptical galaxy, although it is not ruled out that the nebulosity could be the superposition of two less luminous galaxies.
