The advent of next generation imaging telescopes - instruments with wide fields and huge Giga-pixel cameras - will soon create a critical need for deep and precise reference frames for astrometric calibrations. The Deep Astrometric Standards (DAS) program aims to establish such a frame by providing astrometry at the 5-10 mas accuracy level to a depth of V=25. The available datasets of positions, proper motions of faint stars, and VI photometry will enable us to address fundamental questions of galactic disk formation and evolution, stellar buildup and mass assembly via merger events. The DAS images and catalogs will be an example of the type of datasets that large survey telescopes will output near the Galactic plane and can be used to design and test the data reduction pipeline. Here we propose a proof-of-concept observation at one epoch in the selected Hydra field.
