The Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope was used to obtain high-SNR spectra of the C-12O and C-13O J = 1-0 transitions in the central position of the almost edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4945. A spectrum of the CS J = 2-1 line and an upper limit on the strength of the CS J = 5-4 transition were also obtained. A model is presented in which the molecular clouds are distributed in a thick circumnuclear ring of mean radius 220 pc and thickness 200 pc. This model reproduces the observed intensity ratio profile in C-12O/C-13O and suggests that its structure is due to path-length variations, and thus to varying amounts of cloud shielding, over the almost edge-on ring.
