A new technique which has been used to observe the F layer trough for the first time on a macroscopic scale is demonstrated using the data base obtained during four days of studies of the ionosphere during December, 1958 which spanned the range of activity for that month. The trough is found to have been continuous instantaneously on the most disturbed day studied, with a length of 6000 km and an area larger than four million sq km. The trough leading edge was continuous and remained nearly stationary. The trough, which was also stable for similar durations on the other three days, rotated clockwise to earlier magnetic local time by 5.5 hrs and expanded equatorward in magnetic latitude by 20 deg as activity increased from quiet to disturbed. The morphology and activity dependence were consistent with the results of other studies which found that the trough mapped westward convection within the dusk convection cell.
