Ways to improve observed solar and planetary coordinates by taking careful account of anomalous refraction and human errors in astrometric observations performed during the day are discussed. Results are reported for a study of temperature-gradient variations in a transit-circle pavilion, and a device is described for determining human errors in meridian-transit observations of large planets (i.e., those appearing through a telescope as disks rather than point sources). It is shown that agreement between observed right ascensions and ephemerides can be significantly improved by taking the corrections obtained into account.
