The simple method presently used to obtain the time at which the meridian of a subauroral magnetic observatory crosses that of the Harang discontinuity is based on an examination of magnetograms to determine the time's variation with the dawn-dusk (y) component of the IMF, or B(y). It is noted that the time at which the Harang discontinuity is identified in the Northern Hemisphere is earlier for B(y) greater than 0 than on the occasions when it is less, while the converse is true for the Southern Hemisphere. It is suggested that there is no significant seasonal variation in the relationship between the time of the discontinuity and B(y). The magnitude of the observed shifts is about an order of magnitude greater than the theoretical predictions of Cowley (1981).
