An account is given of William Rutter Dawes' independent discovery of
Saturn's dusky ring in 1850, of the confusion that accompanied the
publication of his observations, and of the convoluted series of events
that followed, but which eventually reached a satisfactory conclusion.
Observations of the dusky ring by others before 1850 are also discussed.
