Authigenic and replacement francolites in modern phosphorite have values of 87 Sr / 86 Sr within error of that of modern marine Sr (0.70916 ± 2). During the phosphatisation of carbonate, Sr is not inherited from the carbonate but is totally exchanged with Sr in ambient water. The 87 Sr / 86 Sr in shallow marine pore waters is indistinguishable from the value for modern marine Sr, so authigenic francolite, which precipitates from pore water, accurately records the isotopic ratio of contemporary marine Sr. By comparing the 87 Sr / 86 Sr in francolite with published curves for the isotopic evolution of Tertiary marine Sr we have dated phosphogenetic events affecting the Chatham Rise (4.90 ± 0.35 Ma ), the Nambian margin (1.15 ± 0.25 Ma and 4.70 ± 0.35 Ma ), and the Sechura Desert, Peru (11.8 ± 0.5 Ma ).
