This paper presents the on-line multiaperture spectroscopic system called PUMA 1, which was first used at the 3.60 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Following a short description of the observing procedure on the telescope, the software package developed for the reduction of multi-spectroscopic data is given in details. On the basis of data coming from a run in September 1985, the spectrophotometric performances obtained for extended objects like galaxies in high redshift clusters (z = 0.4) are discussed (from signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra to accuracy on radial velocity measurements). Basic instrumental and reduction references are given and a possible evolution is described.
