Im April 1999 wurde das erste der vier 8-m-Teleskope des ESO-VLT auf dem Cerro Paranal in Chile für den allgemeinen Beobachterbetrieb freigegeben. Dabei stand den Astronomen auch das erste der beiden leistungsfähigen FORS-Instrumente (Focal Reducer and Spectrograph) zur Verfügung, um von Beginn an die Leistungsgrenzen des neuen Teleskops ausschöpfen zu können. Ein Paradebeispiel für die damit angebrochene neue Ära der erdgebundenen Beobachtung ist das FORS Deep Field - einer der tiefsten Blicke ins Universum, die den Astronomen heute zur Verfügung stehen.
