The ionization of hydrogen in the local cloud in which the sun is immersed is here attributed to photons produced by decaying dark matter in the transparent Local Bubble which surrounds the local cloud, and in the local cloud itself. The decay lifetime required is similar to that already invoked for other astronomical reasons. The ionization balance of helium and nitrogen in the local cloud is also studied. In particular, observations of nitrogen which have been made in one particular direction suggest that the strict inequality E(gamma) greater than 14.534 eV may be satisfied. If this were the case it would agree well with the previous strict inequality E(gamma) greater than 13.9 eV, derived from observations of the Coma cluster of galaxies, and with the nonstrict inequality E(gamma) less than 14.8 eV, derived by two independent arguments, one cosmological and the other from the structure of the Galaxy.
