Using 49-cm observations made with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) telescope and 6-cm measurements obtained with the 100-m telescope, the spectral index distribution for the large radio galaxies DA 240 and 3C 236 is determined. The methods of data reduction and sources of error are considered in detail. In the transparent outer components of both sources, it is found that prominent hot spots have relatively flat spectra. Spectral steepening is seen along the major axis of each component in going from the outer leading edge to the trailing bridge emission. For the components of DA 240, which are well resolved in the transverse direction, the spectrum is found to steepen on both sides of the central ridge line. Even though these variations qualitatively conform with those expected if energetic particles injected near hot spots diffuse outwards, radiating energy as they go, the rate of spectral steepening is either much lower or the speed of diffusion much higher than expected. Considering various explanations for this discrepancy, it is concluded that it is probably caused by particle (re)acceleration throughout the extended emission regions of the outer lobes.
