An effort is made to ascertain whether the recently measured Martian atmospheric water's D/H ratio, which is greater than the terrestrial atmospheric water value by a factor of 5.1, entails a revision of the Martian geological evolution model that has been developed over the last 20 years. It is suggested that the D/H enrichment of the atmosphere is compatible with previous geologic conceptualizations involving (1) the outgassing of large quantities of water from the planet, (2) the periodic introduction of juvenile water onto the planet's surface by volcanic action, and (3) the extensive sculpting of the Martian surface by running water.
