The interactions of metal ions with D-ribose and 2'-D-deoxyribose as well as 2'-D-deoxyadenosine and 2'-D-deoxyadenosine-5'-monophosphate have been investigated in solid, glassy state and in water solutions by comparing Diffuse Internal Reflectance, Cylindrical Internal Reflectance and Transmittance spectra. The metal ion mainly interacts with C-C, C-O bonds of sugars as well as with N(1)=C-NH2, N(7) and phosphate moieties of nucleotide. Cylindrical Reflectance, even in dilute solutions, constitutes a useful technique to study the behavior of biological molecule fragments in water.
