The cyclotron instability of a two-component electron-positron plasma in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is considered. For NP 0532, the instability will set in near the light cylinder. As the instability grows, the particles in a beam component will acquire a certain distribution with respect to energy and pitch angle. The synchrotron radiation emitted by these particles would account for the radiation of NP 0532 and the Crab nebula itself throughout the range from optical to gamma-ray wavelengths.
