The recently reported feature at 53 keV in Her X-1, if interpreted as cyclotron emission, imposes restrictions on the possible beaming mechanisms. Pencil-beam schemes seem ruled out, while occultation schemes may work, but only in conjunction with a fan-beam scheme. Pure fan-beam schemes probably offer the most satisfactory and simple mechanism.
