The Sun has recently reminded us about its unpredictable predictability (or predictable unpredictability). Even as it arrives into its anticipated minimum phase, we are appreciating that even modest deviations from what we have experienced in the space age so far can have measurable and significant consequences. Fortunately we now have a much better understanding of the physical connections between the Sun, the heliosphere, and the planetary environments than in any previous cycle. We can put what is happening now in context, and take a new look at how solar cycle variations have and will stretch the range of what we consider 'normal' behavior. This understanding also bears on the question of the distant past and likely future experiences in living with our star.
