The current status of the Large Volume Detector (LVD) now under construction in a tunnel under the Gran Sasso mountain range (Italy) is briefly reviewed. The LVD facility will be used to carry out studies in the fields of neutrino physics, astrophysics, and physics of cosmic rays and also to search for rare processes and exotic particles predicted by modern theories. The first tower of the LVD facility, consisting of 304 scintillation counters and 38 streamer chambers, was put into operation in May 1992.
