I describe a number of current issues and results in the theory of rotation powered pulsars. Among them are 1) the evidence coming from the study of pulsar wind nebulae for the presence of the ``Goldreich-Julian'' electric current; 2) progress on more or less ab initio calculations of magnetospheric structure; 3) the current status of polar cap particle acceleration, gamma ray emission and pair creation, and the relation of such phenomena to pulsar death as radio emitters and to the possibility of observing the polar gamma rays, as an irreducible test of the theory; and 4) the current state of radio emission theory. If time permits, I will also describe an application of the magnetospheric physics of more strongly magnetized rotating neutron stars (magnetars) to the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays.
