The transient analysis of solar flare models that emphasize impulsive flaring action in the release of magnetic energy previously stored in situ is discussed. Two major categories of such models are considered: the impulsive flux transfer event (IFTE) and the current interruption (CI) models. The transient electrical effects of the two models are examined, and it is found that a close correspondence exists between the models. Equivalent-circuit analogs are developed and shown to lead in a natural way to the same circuit equation. The reason for this is that both current interruption and an impulsive flux transfer event bring about the intermixing of magnetic-field systems.
