Recent seismic measurements made in the midocean ridges have been interpreted as evidence for the existence of shallow axial magma chambers beneath intermediate and fast spreading centers, prompting controversy as to whether these are in steady state, whether they persist beneath slow ridges in the steady state, the dimensions and shape of the chamber, its relation to the oceanic crustal stratigraphy, and its relation to observations in ophiolites. In addition, Deep Sea Drilling Project samples have raised fundamental questions about the formation of the magnetic source layer, hydrothermal circulation, and fault mechanisms along the midocean ridges.
