Anderson's (1975) suggestion of neutron-superfluid vortex pinning and unpinning in the crust lattice of a neutron star as the origin of pulsar timing noise is combined with existing estimates of the lattice breaking strength and creep. For the Vela pulsar, such models give large sudden jumps in frequency and in slowing-down rates as well as an interval between glitches, all of which are comparable to those observed. The qualitative differences between Vela and Crab glitches can also be understood.
