The electron heating at quasi-perpendicular collisionless shocks is believed to be related to the electron trajectories mapped using Liouville's theorem through given magnetic field and electrostatic cross-shock potentials. However, a direct estimation of the cross-shock potential in the deHoffmann-Teller frame from electric field measurements is generally a highly non-trivial task, and less direct methods have to be sought. Using Cluster data, we reverse the process. We examine in detail the features and applicability of this mapping, and use it to obtain an estimate of the cross-shock potential in the dHT frame. This estimate is compared with others which rely on the steady-state dissipationless electron momentum and energy equations.
