The authors have made cross-correlation analyses of 1 keV ROSAT and (2-15 keV) HEAO-1 A2 all-sky survey maps over a selected area (≡4000 deg2) with high Galactic latitude (b ⪆ 40°). They have correlated bright ROSAT sources and the residual background separately with the HEAO-1 A2 TOT (2-10 keV) and HRD (5-15 keV) maps. They found no evidence of an extended component (θ ⪆ 2°5). Comparing the 1 keV auto-correlation function found by Soltan et al. (1995) with the upper limit to the extended component of the cross-correlation function (CCF), it is found that the limit on the Raymond-Smith plasma equivalent color temperature of the extended component is kT ⪉ 2.5 keV. Significant soft-hard CCF signals have been found at zero-lag. The authors have modeled the amplitude of the zero-lag CCFs using a cluster luminosity function and an AGN population synthesis model. They observed a factor of ≡3-4 larger zero-lag CCF than predicted from the model. If this excess is caused by the extended component, contributing to zero-lag due to the large beam of the A2 experiment, the color temperature of this component is about kT ≡ 2 keV, consistent with the above upper limit. Alternatively, there is a possibility that a major modification to the population synthesis model and/or an introduction of new classes is needed to explain the excess.
