Earth: Gravitation
Scientific paper
A topological approach to the investigation of the properties of the Earth's gravity field is considered within the frame of critical points theory; in this connection the nature of critical points of gravity on the equipotential surfaces of the gravity field is studied and the concept of critical paths of gravity in the Earth's space is introduced. The links between a variational formulation of the problem of the path-dependence of levelled height differences in geometric levelling and the topological structure of the gravity field along critical paths are shown.
