A method is proposed for the investigation of horizontal gradients of electron density and their spatial and temporal variations on the basis of transionospheric sounding. Criteria are obtained in the plane-isotropic-ionosphere approximation which make it possible to determine the absence or presence of horizontal gradients from transionograms. The application of these criteria is illustrated with examples involving Intercosmos-19 experiments, and it is noted that the proposed approach is suitable for studies of the equatorial anomaly and midlatitude trough.
