A critical comparison of the events associated with the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) and Permian/Triassic (P/Tr) boundaries is presented. The P/Tr event is found to differ from the K/T event both in quantities and in most descriptive qualities. Small concentrations of Ir and other siderophile elements are found in association with one P/Tr section, but not in the ratios of meteorites of or K/T beaks, and not at some other P/Tr sections. Most mass extinction events (MEEs) have no Ir or only traces. Concentrations of chalcophile elements (As, Sb, Zn) are associated with the siderophile elements in many of the K/T and P/Tr sections, but in elemental ratios that have no resemblance to meteorites and that differ in different localities.
