The CRESST experiment searches for dark matter WIMPs using cryogenic detectors. In the first phase of the experiment we are using four 262 g sapphire detectors with thresholds of about 0.5 keV. The installation of the experiment with its prototype cold box has been completed and first detector tests were successful. We have recently replaced the prototype cold box with one made of clean copper to provide low-background conditions, and expect to make our first measurement of backgrounds in the experiment this fall. The status and possible future directions for the experiment will be presented.
