We measure the Stark dominated, hydrogen line broadening in macroscopic plasmas with temperatures and electron densities typical of white dwarf photospheres. Utilizing the large X-ray flux generated by the Z Pulsed Power Facility at Sandia National Laboratories, NM, we uniformly heat a 19 cm3 cell of hydrogen gas to the relevant conditions, taking time resolved measurements of the emission spectra. The experiment will cover a wide range of white dwarf photospheric plasma conditions and compositions, testing not only theoretical white dwarf atmosphere models, but also current line broadening theories, with empirical measurements in unexplored regimes.
