Visualization and viewing tools have been developed as part of two activities designed for middles schools students as part of an NSF-funded instructional materials development program. The emphasis is on data visualization, exposure of students to moderately large geospatial data sets, problem-based learning, and inquiry-based investigations. For example, in a computer-based activity entitled "Crater, Craters, Everywhere", students study patterns of cratering throughout the solar system and correlate crater counts with various planetary parameters. In another activity "Builders and Bashers" students look at a temporal sequence of building and destroying planetary surface features. These activities are well integrated with high speed video resources of hypervelocity experiments and with hands-on activities on crater morphology. The educational scenarios are structured to allow students time to reflect on what they have learned and to do some critical thinking about the results of their analyses of these data sets, images, maps, and simulations. As such the entire package is a model for integration of large data sets into powerful, challenging, and useful classroom activities. This work was supported by an NSF instructional materials grant as part of the Astronomy Village: Investigating the Solar System development program. S. Pompea is an adjunct faculty member of Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona.
