This paper numerically investigates dispersion characteristics of seismic modes propagating along a fluid-filled fracture with low-velocity layers (LVLs). These seismic modes are called crack waves. The LVL represents a zone in which many small fractures are distributed around a main single fracture. The matrix method is used to calculate the dispersion. The LVL decreases the velocity of the crack waves. This decrease depends on the wavelength of the crack waves and the thickness and properties of the LVL. The numerical result indicates that the maximum detectable thickness of the LVL is half of the wavelength, or approximately 1 m for the 50 Hz waves used in the field measurements.
