Covariance mapping allows hidden correlation in a highly fluctuating signal which are lost in a conventional averaging procedure to be revealed unambiguously. Here, an experiment is described in which the covariance approach is used to analyze the fragmentation pattern of molecules after multiple ionization by an intense subpicosecond laser. In this experiment, the covariance is displayed in the form of a two- or three-dimensional map of competing fragmentation channels with axes given by ion time of flight.
