Second order differential equations governing the growth of coupled density perturbation models of significantly different length scales during the matter era of cosmological evolution are derived. Asymptotic expressions are presented for the rates of growth of the perturbation modes. In the special case of an Einstein-de Sitter Universe a Jeans criterion for the growth of short-wave length perturbations has been obtained. The presented analysis favours the condensation of primordial objects with low mass content (Population III stars) triggered by the evolution of large-scale density perturbations.
