Criteria based on the color distributions of know compact molecular clouds (CMCs) are used to identify several thousand CMCs in the IRAS Point Source Catalog, and log N - log S (where S is the total far-infrared flux) plots are presented for six 60-deg galactic longitude sectors within the galactic plane. The results are used to constrain the luminosity function of CMCs, estimate their numbers in the Galaxy, and calculate the CMC mass function. Lifetimes are obtained which range from about 10 to the 5th yr for CMCs powered by stars of 2 solar masses to 10 to the 4th yr for those powered by stars of 15 solar masses.
