The hypothesis that X-ray bursters in globular clusters involve neutron stars in close binary systems is considered and shown to be incapable of explaining the observed association of bursters with globular clusters. It is argued that neutron stars produced by supernovae in globular clusters should rapidly escape from the clusters without being able to 'recombine' into binary systems and that a supernova occurring in a cluster binary without disrupting the system should cause the pair to escape from the cluster. The effectiveness of the binary capture mechanism proposed by Fabian et al. (1975) is also questioned.
