We propose 4-band optical imaging covering 6 square degrees of the first blind Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) survey, now underway with the SZ Array. With these data, we will measure photometric redshifts for the mm-wave detected clusters, enabling investigation of the cosmology-sensitive distribution of the number of clusters as a function of redshift. These optical data are designed to study the properties of clusters found via the SZE, and to cross compare optical and SZ cluster selection over a broad redshift range. Understanding the inherent biases in both optical and SZ samples is crucial for the success of future large, coordinated optical+SZE surveys for cosmology. The proposed griz data will provide photo-z estimates for cluster galaxies with L ≥ 0.33L_* to redshifts as high as z=1 and will allow a detailed study of the galaxy populations in said clusters. Together, these optical+SZE data will allow for a detailed analysis of the complex processes likely involved in the interplay of stellar and gas phase baryons during cluster growth, and its relationship to mass, which is a fundamental prerequisite for optimizing the next generation of cluster- based cosmology experiments.
