The purpose of this research is to explore some of the fundamental principles of cosmology. We derive metrics describing the distribution of matter and energy throughout a flat universe as well as the Robertson-Walker metric and Einstein's field equation for an isotropic, homogenous universe. We use Einstein's field equation in conjunction with cosmological red-shift to predict a model for the expansion of the universe. We investigate the works of Hubble and Friedmann in order to better understand the expansion-contraction behavior of the universe. In addition, we will discuss current theories regarding the behavior and evolution of the universe.
