In an attempt to overcome weaknesses in the Big Bang theory as an all-encompassing explanation of the origin of the universe, a new theory is proposed which visualizes time as being quantized, rather than infinitely divisible. To support this proposal an explanation of the redshift is expounded which employs this concept, whereby the degree of spectrum alteration is related to the magnitude of the time quantum. Also, universal inhomogeneity is explained by the separation of discrete realms in which the size of the quantum decreases from infinity during different epochs. Finally, using this concept the origin of energy and mass can be explained in a manner not previously hypothesized.
