I will describe the physical picture of the high-redshift Lyman-alpha forest that has emerged from cosmological simulations and related analytic models. The simplicity of this picture and the close relation that it implies between the mass density and the (observable) Lyman-alpha optical depth makes the Lyman-alpha forest a natural testing ground for theories of structure formation. I will describe initial results of such tests, with particular attention to constraints on the parameters of a cold dark matter universe derived from a determination of the mass power spectrum at redshift 2.5. I will also discuss the predictions of hydrodynamic cosmological simulations for two other observable signatures of high-redshift structure: the abundance of damped Lyman-alpha systems and the clustering of Lyman break galaxies.
