A simple model of selection effects and the diameter-luminosity distribution of elliptical galaxies is used to investigate the effect of various parameters on optical number counts of galaxies. It is shown that in addition to knowledge of the detection limit, point-spread effects, and angular resolution limits, the number counts are significantly affected by the nature of the diameter-luminosity distribution of the galaxies.
