We propose to observe 14 intermediate redshift massive clusters of galaxies discovered via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect by the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Currently the SPT survey has measured redshifts for 194 clusters, the majority of which are newly discovered clusters at z > 0.5. We propose to observe a sub-sample of SPT clusters at redshifts between 0.3 < z < 0.5 to obtain well calibrated Yx-derived mass estimates. With these mass estimates and the WMAP 7-year results, we expect that the SPT survey will allow a 7% constraint on "w", the dark energy equation of state, a factor of 2 improvement over comparable constraints using cluster evolution and WMAP from Vikhlinin et al.(2009).
