A compactification of the heterotic string on an asymmetric orbifold is proposed that leads to a zero cosmological constant in four dimensions even when SUSY is broken. By considering the effective N = 1, d = 4 supergravity Lagrangean, it is shown that by an appropriate choice of compactification, the singlet contribution to the cosmological constant can be reduced. This, however, requires that the left and right modes of the string propagate on different compact spaces, leading naturally to compactification on asymmetric orbifolds.
