A method for reconstructing the earth's dipole magnetic moment in the
past is proposed which is based on an analysis of data on the
concentration of cosmogenic isotopes in terrestrial samples. Results on
the magnitude of the geomagnetic field over the last 9000 years are
presented, and compared with paleomagnetic data.
